Social Movements In Context Projects
In this project, we were instructed to make a project based on a social movement that we choose. I chose to do racism and for my project I wanted to create an art piece that relates to racism and how it affects everyone. Down below you can see my art project.
Here is my art project, many other students did something similar but with their own choice of social movement. With all these projects that went out, we decided to have an exhibition about it and to show our work and the impact of these projects as a class. Here are some photos from the exhibition that was held.
With each of our projects we had to write an artist statement, which includes a brief description of what your art piece is and what the artist is trying to say in their art piece. Down below you can see my artist statement.
"“Human”
By Adrian Tyler
"Racism, a well known act of disrespect. Racism is all around us and it doesn’t make anything better. My piece “Human” contrasts the world of racism and how it can affect one's everyday life and to really show that everyone can be affected by it. The hands that are shown on the piece are representing that racism is about everyone, it isn’t just focused onto one race and that everyone is involved in it. The word “HUMAN” is also presented in bold at the bottom of the piece, this really means that everyone is equal to each other. The true meaning of this art piece comes from my personal experiences and how it has affected me, being called names that aren’t right to say to one another can hurt people and knowing what that is like has shifted my view onto others. Making this piece makes me feel as if I can change others' views on society, and to hopefully change what they think or what they say in their everyday lives. Although making the art piece was not all thought out all the way, at first I wanted to make something simple with a big meaning behind it. Having this idea in mind, I decided to have a sunset as it would give off a positive vibe, spending not much time on this art piece was not really a challenge and I wanted it to be a quick simple piece that had meaning. Putting handprints on the piece really brought out the meaning of the piece, allowing it to be saying that everyone is equal."

We also had to do another assignment before we got into getting our social movements. We wrote an Op Ed for an issue that we stand strong about or something that we feel strongly of. For example, some students did their Op Ed on gun violence. I did mine on how grades affect a student mentally and how it can be draining for teachers themselves. My Op Ed is linked down below.
